Save the Ranger Station

DO YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN PRESERVING THE RANGER STATION?

You don’t have to own a cabin to get involved in the HRA initiative to contribute to the refurbish and upkeep of the Ranger Station for public access!  Maybe you have muscles, ideas, time, other skills?

The HRA learned that DWV (owner of the physical Ranger Station building) is seeking a renewed Permit from BC Parks (on whose land the Ranger Station sits).  This is a very complicated arrangement on its own, let alone once we start to consider HRA proposal, Cypress Mountain interest, and Squamish Nation Interest.  At this point the HRA Board has expressed an interest in working with all three potential applicants.  The HRA Board, based on new information brought forth by all parties, will soon be sending out a questionaire to HRA members, to determine the level of interest our Association has in getting involved.  The Board is tweaking this document.

HRA members and friends played a big part in the rebuild of Hollyburn Lodge, through interest, labour and donations.  The objective there was to get the lodge rebuilt, to preserve the heritage aspect and to give the public, through Cypress and DWV, great access to this important backcountry lodge for recreation.  Unfortunately, there has been little actual use of the building by HRA or DWV outside of the ski operation.  We will be looking at what can be done in this regard, but involvement in the Ranger Station would certainly give HRA some access, as small as the building is.  Our questionaire will be asking for ideas that aren’t “commercial”,  Please give this serious thought as there will be some serious obligation to the HRA if we take this on.  More to come.  A great way for Members at Large to chip in to preserve a heritage building!  Here is a photo of the interior.  Wouldn’t hold much more that a dozen.  Also, at this point I should mention that The Mountaineering Club of BC has been (or will be) awarded a Permit to Occupy the Norm Deakin Cabin in the Westlake area.  Congratulations to our member David Scanlon for his work on navigating that application, and to the members of that club.
